music programs, enabling students to continue their music education at their new schools. The foundation is also working with schools that are rebuilding and opening their doors to students again.

"Playing music may be the very thing that can lighten the burden that this experience has placed on these kids," said Felice Mancini, executive director of The Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation. "The Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation wants to contribute to the healing through music. We're thrilled to be able to help put instruments into student's hands."

Donations made to The Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation for the schools taking in children from the hurricane-affected areas will be matched by NAMM (International Music Products Association) up to a total of $100,000.

Donations to The Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation Hurricane Katrina effort can be made by visiting www.mhopus.org, or by calling 818-784-6787.

Research has shown that the benefits of music education to children include success in both school and society, developing intelligence, discipline and creativity. Definitive links have been made between students involved in music education and their academic performance, reasoning skills, work habits and low incidence of substance abuse.

The Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation supports music education and its many benefits through the donation and repair of musical instruments to underserved schools, community music programs and individual students nationwide. The organization was inspired by the 1995 motion picture "Mr. Holland's Opus" and was founded by Michael Kamen, who composed the music for that movie and countless others. In the last seven years, new and refurbished instruments with a value of approximately $4 million have been donated to more than 600 school and community music programs across the country.
