Texas Governor Declares Home Education Week

March 31, 2005 -- Governor Rick Perry signed a Proclamation declaring the week of April 3 - 9, 2005 as Home Education

 Week. The proclamation states in part that:

"I encourage all Texans to recognize the importance of home schools and the dedication of parents who choose this option.

As we look to the future, let us continue to embrace our responsibility to our children, focusing always on building a foundation of excellence that will ensure their continued success."

 choir from the Houston, will be performing during the event. Many of our legislators and state officials will also speak to the assemblage of homeschool families in support of home schooling.

Thirteen-year-old Caitlin and her mom, Kathy, from Houston, made a day of it last time, touring the capitol and enjoying the rally. Caitlin said "hearing the legislatures talk about the bills made it more real" while Kathy mentioned how "encouraging it was to see so many homeschoolers from all over the state". They both enjoyed the chance to hear Lt. Governor David Dewhurst at the 2003 rally.

Doug, a homeschooling father from Houston who took time off from work to attend with his daughter, said that "I never knew until my visit that that I could have direct influence in decisions that are made in the government. I did not know that individual citizens could get involved."

The first Home Education Week Proclamation was signed by Governor William Clements in 1989, and has been a Texas tradition since. Families from all over Texas will be coming to Austin to support the freedoms for parents who teach their children at home.
