Stress Management Keeps Up with Emerging Neuroscience: Upcoming Conferences

(PRWEB) April 2, 2008 -- Beginning on April 8, 2008 a series of conferences will be held at Loma Linda University, University of California, Davis and Oregon Health and Sciences University on a unique, proven method that reflects increased interest in addressing the root cause of problems -- stress -- rather than relying excessively on medications to treat its symptoms. The program, The Solution Method, is an integration of neuroscience and attachment theory and may be the missing link in health care.

“  With increasing marketing and promotion of medications for stress-related symptoms, some people are worried that they are needlessly dependent upon medications, and concerned about side-effects and drug interactions and the costs of medication...
With stress-related problems accounting for up to 90 percent of primary care physician office visits and health care expenditure spinning out of control, innovative methods of impacting chronic stress are needed. These conferences are designed to support health professionals in learning more about this evidence-based method to relieve their own stress, as well as to begin becoming certified in facilitating Solution Groups for the public. There has been a 300 percent increase in public demand for basic training in the method in the last six months.

According to Laurel Mellin, associate clinical professor of family and community medicine and pediatrics, University of California, San Francisco and the developer of the program, "With increasing marketing and promotion of medications for stress-related symptoms, some people are worried that they are needlessly dependent upon medications, and concerned about side-effects and drug interactions and the costs of medications. Many want to find powerful tools to deal with stress more effectively so that they quiet excessive cravings for common soothers like food, spending, smoking, overexercise, alcohol and overworking.

Although The Solution Method™ and The Shapedown® Program for pediatric weight management were developed over the last 30 years at the university, comments Mellin, "The neurological research that has been published in the last 10 years has resulted in the recrafting the method to make it easier and more effective. Most people see important changes in their happiness right from the start."

According to Mellin, "The method is very practical. You learn

how to take 10 seconds, 10 times per day, and identify your stress number on a scale of 1 to 5. Each number has a corresponding tool that provides the quickest, easiest way in that state to move the brain from stress to well-being. Each time you use the tools you feel an instant pulse of pleasure and relaxation."

She cautions, "This is not a quick fix. It's the repeated use of the skills that weakens the neural circuits in our brain that trigger stress and strengthens the neural circuits of positive emotion, so that we have a longer fuse, we bounce back from stressful moments more rapidly and the trauma from past hurts begins to heal. In time, our wiring changes so that our natural state -- our personal comfort zone -- is to be more present and create more joy in our lives.

Aeron Hicks, a health care consultant who used the method to address a long-standing weight problem and improve her health comments: "I didn't like the idea of popping a pill for every complaint. I was concerned about the side effects, the expense, and the sense of dependency on something artificial. Simply put, by using these skills, I'm happier and healthier -- by choice. To me, that's what it's all about."
