Federation (CHSF), the country’s first established voice for parents, is launching an initiative that will help parent leaders across Canada to inform and mobilize other parents to prevent substance abuse among children and youth.

“  This project will help to bridge that gap.
On March 27, parent leaders and addictions groups will be meeting in Ottawa at the Minto Place hotel to begin the mobilization and dissemination process.

With growing public concern about new highly addictive drugs such as crystal meth and oxycontin, as well as ongoing problems such as binge drinking, the funding ($307K) being provided by Health Canada’s Community Initiative Fund is arriving at an opportune time.

Georgina Allen, President of CHSF, has welcomed the chance to inform parent leaders:

“Parent and schools are often unaware of the excellent programs and resources out there. As well, community and addictions groups often struggle to get their information to parents. This project will help to bridge that gap.”

, and support materials available in the addictions field for parents. However, their dissemination, availability, and ongoing access for parents are problematic in several areas of Canada. This project will use the strength of mandated and/or long-established parent organizations recognized by schools to address this lack of coordination by gathering and disseminating the available resources in a cohesive and collaborative manner. This project will:

- Gather and publicize high-quality resources for parents in a coordinated and cohesive communications strategy

- Present these resources to parent leaders at existing national and provincial/territorial workshops and train these parents in how the resources can be used by other parents, by parent organizations, by schools, and by other organizations

- Organize and support presentations to parent organizations at the school board level and local school parent committees

In each province and territory, parent leaders will approach their addictions agencies, parent groups, public health and education

organizations, and others to identify local resources for parents. These resources, along with national and international materials and models, will be described in a tool kit that includes a web component.
