WHO: Richard Dreyfuss
Oscar-winning actor Richard Dreyfuss will speak at the National History Day national contest on June 12th. Dreyfuss has said that if he could live life over he would like to be a teacher, but since that is not possible he is using his talent to start a "Civics Rights" movement -- ensuring that students have the tools that they need to interpret, engage, and understand both the history and future of our system of government. Dreyfuss has spoken at venues across the country about the need for civic engagement. He sits on the board of the National Constitution Center and is a Senior Associate Member, St. Antony's College, Oxford.
Three of the films Dreyfuss starred in are listed on the American Film Institute's list of the greatest 100 films. He received notable praise for his role in "Mr. Holland's Opus," for which he received Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for Best Actor. He became known to millions when he starred in the movie "Jaws" and "Close Encounters of the Third Kind." At age 30, he won the Academy Award for Best Actor in "The Goodbye Girl."
