funding companies offering both student loan consolidation and reconsolidation programs, is urging student borrowers, families and concerned citizens to speak out and contact their senators to ask them to repeal the single lender rule when the Senate votes on the College Access and Opportunity Act, or H.R. 609. Currently the Senate is in recess, so a vote is not expected until sometime after April 24.

The Senate received the bill after approval by the House. The Higher Education

Act of 1965 on March 30 was extended for six years by a House vote. Included in the bill is the student loan legislation to eliminate the single holder rule, which only is in effect for student loans that are received on or after July 1. In effect, the single holder rule stays put for the next three months, leaving student loan borrowers without many options.

It now is up to the Senate to make changes. However, if it does approve the single lender rule, it would not be until July 1 that the repeal is in force. In addition, if the Senate does institute changes and passes them, the bill then heads back to the House.

Repeal of the single lender rule would hold promise for student loan borrowers and give them more options. Currently, student loans are forwarded through the Department of Education

, leaving students with barely any options. Students are unable to consolidate loans with other lenders and, therefore, do not have the chance to apply for better rates and incentives. Students often are stuck for years with one lender’s sour benefits. Student Loan Reconsolidation under the single lender rule also is prohibited for students.

Student borrowers who want and need to have better options should have the right to go with the lender of their choice. It should not be a burden to pay off student loans when the possibility exists to get better terms.

As students have done for so long, they should stand up and speak out. They easily can write their senators to ask them to repeal the single lender rule. Students and anyone concerned can go to http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm?OrderBy=last_ name&Sort=ASC to write their senators. They also can ask to speak with their senate office by calling (202) 224-3121.

A simple letter and phone call can go a long way, especially if enough students and other concerned citizens make the effort.
