May 5, 2005 -- In honor of Financial Literacy Month, the Miami Police Department’s Do the Right Thing Program joined forces with Consolidated Credit Counseling Services, Inc. in an effort to teach Miami teens the importance of fiscal responsibility. Sixty students, specially selected from 12 City of Miami middle and high schools, participated in the Do The Right Thing Youth Leadership 2005 Training Seminar, presented by Consolidated Credit Counseling Services, Inc., on Wednesday, April 27th from 9 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
The students were selected based on their economic need and leadership potential. The training was followed by a celebratory luncheon from noon – 1:00 p.m. and a graduation ceremony from 1:00 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. The seminar, patterned after Leadership Miami, featured Gary S. Herman, president of Consolidated Credit Counseling Services Inc., who taught the students about budgeting and accessing their financial well-being. Consolidated Credit, a nonprofit

and debt management organization, is devoted to furthering financial literacy across the country. Additionally, Dr. M. Tina Dupree (a.k.a. the “Chicken Lady”) focused on leadership and conflict resolution skills.
Do The Right Thing, Inc. is a not-for-profit program operating under the auspices of the City of Miami Police Department. The program, now in its 15th year, is dedicated to recognizing and rewarding area youth for their exemplary behavior, deeds or accomplishments.
