Foundation [SIEF is situated like few others to attempt to tackle this unending enigma: At the grass-roots, youth level - a time of `coming of age.’

On Oct. 20, the 2nd annual SIEF symposium, comprised of key players in the fields of sports, academia, and media, will once again attempt to break down a system that is rapidly escalating into what a growing majority now perceive as “alarming proportions.” The SIEF and its symposium, founded by attorney/author Eldon Ham and journalist/NFL official Terry Poulos, will convene at Loyola University’s Water Tower Campus to deliberate on an avalanche of problems concerning amateur athletics.

Through it all, the SIEF steadfastly believes that, at its best, sport is a crucial element in the fabric of life in America, the modern world’s undisputed destination for athletic endeavor. The SIEF’s unique focus is at the heart of where intervention is most needed: middle school

on up. An age when boys turn into men and girls into women. Where millions of youth, parents, coaches and others desperately reach for a magic potion and every conceivable edge. A place of accelerating mass hysteria fueled by astronomical yet scarcely-attainable paydays. A time of self-achievement and self-esteem. The battle of a `win at all costs’ mentality.

We are nurtured by of our environment, and it’s polluted. Rafael Palmeiro, Balco labs, Olympic champions and more have fallen. Our heroes accomplish world-class achievements, and dollars. And we watch how far they go, an Arnold Schwarzenegger perhaps. Our `Role idols.’

The SIEF aims to explore this and more. Why are steroids far more than merely a sports issue?. Why are more and more non-athlete girls - some as early as 12 years of age - ingesting steroids and other exotic hormone concoctions? What role does sport play? What role do coaches and parents play as mentors and educators? What role do the media play? Plus, the symposium will delve into topics such as hazing, bullying, gambling, parent interaction, club sports, coach qualification and management, accountability, and overall aberrant behavior.

philosophy in response to an unmet and crucial need - support and guidance for coaches, athletic directors, school administrators, principals and overall academia. Most important, on the youth through small-college level where resources are greatly lacking to confront the myriad legal, policy, and government mandates and regulations involving youth sports.

Other confirmed speakers include Ham, IHSA Executive Director Dr. Marty Hickman, CPS Director of Sports Administration Calvin Davis, and William C.
