Football Hall of Famer Talks About The Value of Catholic Education -- Belmont Abbey College to Host NY Event with Buffalo Bills Superstar Joe D

(PRWEB) March 30, 2006 -- Mention the name Joseph DeLamielleure and just about any fan of the NFL will tell you, the swift pulling guard not only helped famed running back O.J. Simpson make a name for himself, but it also earned DeLamielleure a reputation as one of the greatest offensive guards to ever play the game.

Looking back at DeLamielleure’s successful career and no one can say he doesn’t have heart.

Ironically enough, it was an irregular heartbeat that almost stopped the future Hall of Famer from ever playing professional football in the first place. “Joe D,” as his fans know him, anchored the Buffalo Bills’ famed “Electric Company” offensive line for most of ‘70s. An All-American and three-time All-Big Ten performer at Michigan State, Joe D. was selected by the Bills in the first round of the 1973 NFL Draft and eventually went on to earn All-Rookie honors.

However, Joe D. says he credits much of his success to a strong Catholic education

In the 1970s, DeLamielleure and his Buffalo Bills offensive line mates had been dubbed the “Electric Company,” because they “turned the Juice loose.” The “Juice,” of course, was Hall of Fame running back O.J. Simpson. Selected in the first round of the 1973 draft by the Buffalo Bills, there was concern when DeLamielleure failed his physical. But when tests showed his irregular heartbeat was not serious, DeLamielleure began a string of career honors that few guards had or have since exceeded.

One of the most honored lineman of the Bills’ respected front wall, DeLamielleure had been selected eight times during his career for first- or second-team All-Pro; named seven times to the first- or second-team All-AFC, and six times to the Pro Bowl. In 1975, the NFL Players Association named him Offensive Lineman of the Year.

Extremely durable and dependable, DeLamielleure had played in 185 consecutive games during his 13 playing seasons with the Bills and the Cleveland Browns. A starter from the first game of his rookie season, he played and started in every game for eight seasons in Buffalo before being traded to Cleveland.

Primarily due to the success of the Bills’ running attack led by Simpson, DeLamielleure was best known for his run blocking. With DeLamielleure manning the front line, O.J. became the first player to rush for more than 2,000 yards in a season. But, he was more than just a run blocker, DeLamielleure was also an effective pass blocker and rarely allowed his opponent to disrupt Buffalo’s or Cleveland’s pass plays. DeLamielleure, who was named to the NFL’s 1970s All-Decade Team, finished his career in 1985 with a final season back where it had begun, in Buffalo.

Twelve years later, he was honored by the Bills by being placed on the team’s Wall of Fame at Ralph Wilson Stadium.

"It meant a lot. It meant a whole lot,” said DeLamielleure in an interview at the time. “I wish my parents were both alive, they both had passed away by that time. It was my proudest moment in football because it’s not for a game like when you get a game ball or go to a Pro Bowl for a season - that’s for a career. It’s the best honor I’ve ever had in football."
