Esteemed Graduate of The American College, Margaret Brashaw, CLU, to Celebrate a Milestone Birthday

(PRWEB) May 30, 2006 -- A pioneer and trendsetter in the insurance industry, Margaret Bradshaw, CLU®, will be celebrating her 101st birthday on June 12. Bradshaw was the first woman in Rhode Island to earn the Chartered Life Underwriter™ (CLU®) designation from The American College in 1931. Since then more than 95,000 individuals have earned this distinction.

“  Her leadership and abilities helped companies recognize the enormous contributions women can make to this profession.
Larry Barton, Ph.D., president and chief executive officer for The American College, said, “Margaret’s trailblazing spirit helped advance the role of women in the insurance industry. Her leadership and abilities helped companies recognize the enormous contributions women can make to this profession.”

She was the first woman to be hired by John Hancock Life Insurance Company in their Providence, R.I. district in the late 1920s and the only individual to have a CLU® at the company at that time. Here she became a highly-respected and effective insurance professional at a time when it was a male-dominated profession. As a CLU® designee, Bradshaw committed herself to place her clients interests above all else, to stay current on industry developments and adhere to a strict code of ethics.

John Hancock honored Bradshaw in 2005 for her years of excellent service by dedicating an academic office to her on The American College’s Bryn Mawr, Pa. campus. Bradshaw herself donated a sundial garden to The College’s campus in 2004 because she believes that The College has been instrumental in making insurance a profession and supports the institution’s educational mission.

“Margaret is the most interesting and stimulating person you will ever meet,” Stephen Tarr, CLU®, ChFC®, senior vice president for The American College, said. “She truly was an industry pioneer who experienced so much change in the insurance profession. We wish her well and we are very proud of her accomplishments.”

Bradshaw currently resides in New York City, N.Y.
