today in its appeal to become a charter school. Comprised of eight members, including two notable Coloradoans, Jared Polis and Bob Schaffer, the Board voted 5 to 3 in favor of EFD's charter appeal. The essence of the Colorado Board's decision is that EFD is not a private/charter conversion school as had been earlier contended by the Cherry Creek School District. This means that within 30 days, the Cherry Creek Board must consider EFD only on the merits of its program for a Fall 2006 opening.
“ Voting (in favor of EFD's motion) was one of the easiest decisions I have had to make recently. ”
Today's ruling was recognized by Colorado BOE members as precedent-setting and "even a little scary" for some because it may allow many more charters to be formed in Colorado. For Jared Polis, the decision was simple: "Voting (in favor of EFD's motion) was one of the easiest decisions I have had to make recently. Perhaps public education may benefit by allowing private entities to share what they know."
Upon hearing the final vote, EFD's President stated: "We are delighted that the Colorado Board of Education reaffirmed the value of giving Colorado families the choice they deserve in public education. For the first time, education professionals with experience running private institutions will be able to focus their formidable talents and energies toward the needs of educating all of Colorado's students." Shaw went on to say: "If CCSD grants our charter to become part of Colorado's best public school district, it will represent a winning equation for the District, for us, but mostly for the larger community."
Founded in March of 2005, Ecole Française de Denver is a nonprofit school offering full education in French from ages 2½ through Second Grade. Grades three through Middle School (8th Grade) offer bilingual French-English curricula. EFD hopes to receive charter school status from the Cherry Creek School District for the start of the 2006 school year, making it only the second charter school within Cherry Creek and the only charter school in America recognized by the government of France.
