April 29, 2005 -- Native Austinite and Huston-Tillotson University neighbor Lloyd Doggett, member of the United States House of Representatives, will deliver the institution’s Commencement Convocation address on Saturday, May 7, 2005, at 9 a.m., on the campus at 900 Chicon Street. More than 75 graduates will have their degrees conferred during the ceremony that will be marked as the first since the institution changed its name to Huston-Tillotson University.
Congressman Doggett (D-TX) is currently serving his sixth term. In Washington, Doggett is a senior member on the Ways and Means Committee, which has jurisdiction over taxes, Social Security, health, and international trade.
At 26, Doggett was first elected to the Texas State Senate where he served from 1973 to 1985. During his tenure in the Texas Senate he authored 124 state laws, including the Texas Sunset Act that required periodic review to modify or abolish ineffective state laws and bureaucracies. In addition he also worked to create the Texas Commission on Human Rights that worked to prohibit discrimination in employment. Doggett is a strong advocate for

Other program highlights include the presentation of the Crystal Ram Award, the University’s highest award of distinction, members of the Class of 1955 marching en masse, and the presentation of a $1.2 million grant facilitated by Doggett for the University from the Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) to complete the renovation of the Old Administration Building. Prior to Commencement Convocation, honor students will receive scholastic awards at Honors Day Convocation, scheduled Friday, May 6 at 10 a.m. in King-Seabrook Chapel. Alumna Latricia M. Thompson, Class of 2000, who graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in biology, and is an imminent physician, will deliver the keynote address.
Families and friends planning to attend campus events should enter the campus from Chalmers Street or Comal Streets and park in the appropriate lots. Parking is also available in surrounding church lots.
