Campus Compact State and Regional Consortia Receive $3 Million from Learn and Serve

 and Serve America. Learn and Serve, a program of the federal Corporation for National and Community Service, is dedicated to the support and encouragement of service-learning.

Federal allotments in 2007 have reserved $34.1 million for Learn and Serve, a significant decrease from the 2005's funding of $43 million. Hundreds of service-learning advocacy organizations apply for grants, making competition stiff.

Service-learning is a teaching method that incorporates community work into the curriculum. For example, environmental studies students may conduct water safety testing for a local town as part of their coursework, while engineering students may gain insight into textbook concepts by providing technology training to youths in underprivileged neighborhoods.
