Brampton Adult Soccer: Division II Championship Match Report

April 12, 2005 -- FC Write-Offs carried through the indoor season with relative ease. Finishing with a record that was near perfect, with 10 Wins and only a single loss and draw to counter the successes. In fact, the only team to even remotely challenge during the regular season was Armada II with their 10-2-0 record.

“  Can the Cougar Hunters, with their aggression and pace, be the team to challenge the dominant FC Write-Offs?
FC Write-Offs met with a scattered Cougar Hunters squad. The Hunters had seen their share of turmoil this past season as they were participants in less then perfect match conditions with the Unknown Strikers. Known as much for their disciplinary concerns as they are for their speed and skill, some were bold enough to pose the question: "Can the Cougar Hunters, with their aggression and pace, be the team to challenge the dominant FC Write-Offs?"

The only other contenders were removed relatively quick by upstart younger clubs. Both the Unknown Strikers and Armada II were served early exits - this was especially disheartening for Armada II Captain/Manager, Sandro Ribic, as he continues his efforts to create a dynasty with his two tiered team. (Ribic has squads in both BAS men's divisions: Armada I and Armada II.) As such, Colin Souce, Captain of the Cougar Hunters, was handed a golden opportunity. Being no stranger to success (Souce was keeper for the 2004 Fall Indoor Champion Warriors), few teams were as well poised to take on what had become the juggernaut know as the Write-Offs. (About the only thing these guys can't do, is get themselves written off!)

The match started and the pace was set. The players on both sides were fleet footed, with Write-Offs giving every indication that they were the dominant side. Still, this did not prevent the Cougar Hunters from creating chances - all of which were very quickly shut down by the defensive stalwarts of the Write-Offs.

In the 8th minute, Write-Offs Michael Lima spun at the top of the box, letting a left footed shot go only to directly smack the post.

Early on in the match, Jorge Calzato made it evidently clear that when fancy foot work was in question, he intended to be the answer.

It wasn't long before Kevin Lourenco gave the Write-Offs a 1-0 lead.

The majority of the Cougar Hunters' responses to Write-Offs pressure were very quickly parried by the Write-Offs defenders.

At the start of the second half, Rony Geadah of the Cougar Hunters squandered what was an absolute gimme, putting the ball wide instead of simply redirecting it into the back of the net.

In response to the effort, Write-Offs returned with one of their own as Anthony DeOliveira netted his 15th goal of the session (the previous 14 coming during the regular season). His finishing was uncannily calm and cool.

With 24 minutes left to play, there was a suggestion that the tide could turn as Write-Offs keeper was felled after incidental contact with a Cougar Hunter. He managed to continue through until the end and was veritably untested for the remaining 20 minutes.

With little more then 10 minutes left, Jorge Calzato flicked the ball over his own head, turned and brought it down with his chest, then before the ball managed to bounce even once, he flicked it over a defender straight into the path Michael Trasias for a 3-0 score line. Trasias finishing, although unremarkable, was clean and precise and earned Calzato and himself a vote for goal of the season.

It was skilled play, determination and outright hustle that had a panel of judges nudging one another as they prepared to vote Calzato Man-Of-The-Match. Despite not scoring a goal, Calzato was involved in every play, every time he was on the pitch. With the exception of Michael Lima and Mark Reich, few other players stood out like Calzato did.

In the final 5 minutes of the match, however, Calzato earned himself two consecutive yellow cards resulting in a sending off. As a result, Man-Of-The-Match Honours were bestowed upon Mark Reich, whose ability to progress forward while still remaining as effective as a brick wall when stopping opponents in the midfield, was delightful to watch. Reich himself had both set up and taken scoring opportunities.

The final result is not at all indicative of the dominance which FC Write-Offs displayed. The Cougar Hunters were merely buoyed by their ability to play physically against a side that was of the same nature and stature as they. However, the classier, more disciplined of the two sides prevailed on the basis of skill and speed. It was a good day for Brampton Adult Soccer
