(PRWEB) April 5, 2006 -- Yarmouth veteran doctor, Shelagh Leahey hatched the idea to randomly draw the health care numbers of 1500 people from 8000 in need of a family physician. Citizens had a 17 percent chance of winning one of three internationally trained doctors, but lady luck did not have to choose because only 1542 people played the game. The lack of participation made this lottery a dream come true with a 100% chance of winning. Every applicant will be congratulated by April 7th; the original lottery date.
“ She reminds us that one person can make a difference through being innovative while coping. ”
For Frotten Nickerson however, the lottery will go on. Frotten is a young Nova Scotia boy who desperately needs a family doctor and his health card is one of 8000 that will be randomly shuffled by lady luck. Frotten is the main character in The ‘Open Yar Mouth’ Health Care Lottery picture book that will be available in stores June, 2006.

“I was very moved by Yarmouth’s story.” Cowtan said. “I had to write about it.”
When asked to expand, Cowtan continued, “The concept of a health care lottery is imbedded with stirring messages about our government, our services, and ourselves. Dr. Leahey’s solution was both courageous and inspiring. She reminds us that one person can make a difference through being innovative while coping. Inspirational lessons like this belong in a children’s book,” she said.
Cowtan makes The ‘Open Yar Mouth’ Health Care Lottery accessible as a lesson by including educational resources for teachers, as well as key articles from the CBC and The Medical Post in the book. Cowtan’s skilled verse combined with water colour illustrations by Joseph A. Jeskiewicz successfully serve up an overdue dose of Canadian reality with a spoonful of honey.
